Getting Shift Done

“Space Cadet to command post,” those were the words my son said to me last night as I placed the last box full of shift into the garage. I have been on an earth mission of getting shift done, and yes, when I get into this mode I tend to become a space cadet.

They say that big things often have small beginnings, and this mission of getting shift done started out simple and small and then my house blew up (okay, like not fire and smoke blew up, but like stuff everywhere, looks like a reno project but it isn’t, kind of blew up).

It all started when my daughter-in-law asked me where the iron was kept, and I told her “in the cupboard in the laundry room, on the top left-hand side.” She couldn’t find it, so I went looking with her and that’s when it started – the shift that I had stashed in there was unbelievable! Then she asked me for the ironing board, and that is when I remembered that I had thrown it out in my last “getting shift done” moment.

Now, I am mindful that awareness is the process of awakening intelligence, but clearly I must have been operating in space cadet mode for quite some time because there’s been a slow and steady accumulation of shift that was no longer serving anyone.

The drawers and cupboards were pretty scary places filled with lots of shift, but coffee tables and counter tops, in general, are my Kryptonite areas for being catchalls. So, to make getting my shift done easier, I would either get an empty box or a big garbage bag and just start chucking shift into it, and I mean a lot of shift. On a couple of occasions I just hauled stuff out to the end of the driveway and put a sign on it that said “free shift” and sure enough, all the shift would be gone by the end of the day.

This got to be fun because I would put shift out, and it was better than a garage sale because I didn’t want any money for my shift, I just wanted it to be gone. A few times I would go outside and chat with the people that were going through my shift and I would tell them stories about some of the items and before I knew it, they were wanting to know when I was going to put out more shift. Yes, even my youngest son tells me “Mom, you just can’t help yourself can you!”

And, I must confess that I was tempted to throw out my coffee tables and counter tops due to their Kryptonite effect but decided against it …

In the back of my mind as I was throwing shift out, was the thought “what if I was dead and my children had to go through all of this shift” and I would imagine them laughing and groaning saying things like “Can you believe she kept this shift?” and “Oh my God, we can do a tv show with this called The Mystic’s Messy Shifts” and “Look what I found, another empty scented oil bottle, more paper clips, screw drivers, keys to the car she sold, Canadian Tire money, 4 hammers, buttons, old recipe books, parking tickets, the instruction manual to the garage door opener and someone’s grade 7 shark project!”

I am not alone in getting shift done. Throughout this process, I was in constant contact with people in person and over e-mails and messages, and they are all in the process of organizing, cleaning, throwing out, tidying up, giving away and generally making space for something exciting and new. Getting ready to receive is an awesome place to be in, and intuitively, I feel that we are all in our own unique ways, letting go of what no longer serves us to allow us to embrace the new that is coming.

In my last sweep through of getting any left over shift outta here, I felt my heart leap with joy at the understanding of the essence of freedom and letting my soul guide me to what I really needed versus what I thought I wanted. Every shift that I let go of had an e-motional energy attachment.

The biggest shift that I let go of in this process was the shift that no longer served me; shift that I never even looked for, let alone missed. But what I did find was precious – I found a sense of clarity, a new scented candle, a brand new journal, a few pens, peacefulness, space, creativity and the iron!

Leaving you with loving and compassionate shift …
